Day 0! Heading out to Venice...

So, the time has finally come.

I stayed up all night for this morning's early flight to Venice, and the start of my year abroad! It's an exciting time in my life and I look forward to sharing my experiences here. However, it wasn't all excitement at first...

The truth is, despite being a long-time language nerd and lucky enough to travel quite frequently in the last few years, I suffer a lot with pre-trip anxiety! For me, almost every flight out of England has been preceded by random moments of panic over everything that could go wrong... and yet I always come home completely fine, if sad that it's all over.

I have not learned my lesson.

In the months leading up to today, I've been fretting over everything from paperwork to accommodation, from university modules to bank accounts. It seemed like everyone else had everything under control, while I constantly swing between being excited for this year and absolutely dreading it! But, I'm pleased to say, my nerves are already starting to calm down.

After arriving at Treviso airport, I took a bus to where I'm staying temporarily until I can move into my university residence in Venice. I've just had a few hours' sleep and a trip to the shops so far! I'm looking forward to exploring a bit more in the time I have before I properly move to Venice. I will have to commute to the university for a little while, but hey, I have nothing against a few train rides!

After a good night's sleep, I'll be heading to my first university event on my year abroad! I'm a bit nervous (again), but other people will be in the same boat, so I'm sure I'll survive! After all, that's kind of the point of a year abroad: learning to survive in a new place.

So, here's to the start of a slightly scary, but exciting year abroad: la vita nuova!
